I got an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from Edelweiss Plus. Thanks, Edelweiss Plus!
The book is essentially two love stories in one. The first love story takes place in the present: teen Alice goes to Paris to claim an apartment her late Grandmother left to her. Accompanying her is her parents (her mom suffering from depression after the loss of her mom). Along the way, she finds a diary that belonged to her unknown Great-Aunt Adalyn. With the help of a new French friend, Paul, she sets out to uncover the mystery behind this previously unknown relative.
The second part of the story takes place in the early 1940s in Nazi-occupied Paris. Teen Adalyn despises the Nazis, but when she meets Luc (the leader of a French resistance group), she's pulled into the world of spying. And maybe some love sparking for both girls.
There are a couple of reasons I was drawn to this book. I find the 1940s my favorite period in history to read about. But before this, I never read about a Nazi-occupied city. I only read mostly about America during World War 2. And when I saw that this was a contemporary romance, I just had to pick it up.
I honestly thought I'd get confused about where I was at first in the story: Alice or Adalyn's story? But the story blends so well together. I was able to keep up and follow Alice on her journey and see how Adalyn's normal life went to spying. I was NOT suspecting the story to end as it did (no spoilers), but am still glad I read it.
The only parts I didn't really like were the war parts, but if you took those out in a love story that took place in wartime, what are you left with? So I can't really complain (and I'm not).
This is a good wartime love story, plus a mystery as well. It's a good contemporary read.
