"Obsidian" by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I was looking through some "Recommended for You" books and found this, so I thought I'd give it a read, and boy, I'm glad I did. Once I picked it up, I had a hard time putting it down.

A few years after the death of her father, Katy and her nurse-mother Kellie move to West Virginia, next-door to a pair of teen twins, Dee and Daemon Black. While Dee comes off as bubbly and friendly towards Katy, her brother comes across as arrogant, protective of Dee, and somewhat of a jerk. As the story progresses and Katy grows closer to the twins, she learns their secret: they're Luxen aliens from a planet billions of lightyears away. Katy also soon finds herself in the cross-hairs of a battle between the Luxen and their natural enemies (Shadow beings known as the Arum).

The first thing I thought of after reading the first few chapters was that it was giving me major "Roswell" vibes, which was the late 90s/early 2000s TV show slightly similar to the book about a human girl who starts to fall for an alien teen boy. The original Roswell was a show I liked, so comparing the book to that is a compliment from me.

I really enjoyed the relationship growing between Katy and Daemon. They don't want to be attracted to each other, but even the readers can tell they slowly are realizing it.

The other characters were enjoyable as well. I really liked Dee, found myself wanting to meet the Blacks assumed-dead brother Dawson and his girlfriend Bethany (you can find out what happened to them in the prequel "Shadows"), and even enjoying Matthew and the Thompsons (even the ex Ash). There was not one character that felt forced or out of place. Even the pacing of the story felt just right; not too rushed or slowed, and it didn't feel like the characters had to rush to get together before the end of the story.

This is an enjoyable, thrilling, adventurous sci-fi romance young adult book good for readers who enjoy some action, sci-fi, or/and romance. The only reason it's rated one star off from the full 5-star rating is that I'm not a fan of the plethora of cuss words in it.
