I am a fan of teen time-travel romance stories. I love the idea of two people, who aren't supposed to meet based on they're from different time periods, meet and fall in love, and this book didn't disappoint.
I found myself feeling like I was Zara, traveling back in time from the 2010s to 1840, when California was still a Mexican territory, called Alta California. This story takes place a little over 5 years before the Mexican-American War.
A part of me had always wondered about my home-state (California) when it was not a part of the United States. This story helped me see how it was back then, with a girl from my time as the first-person narrator.
I found myself disliking Javier when Zara did, and liking him a little more as she did. His mother, though, Doña Elena, was a little overbearing, though, at times, and she was my most disliked-main-character. But overall, it was a great read.
